CHAPTER ONE. | CHAPTER TWO. | TABLE OF CONTENTS.

“We should probably set some ground rules, right?” You murmur to his chest after a short while of being in his embrace. 

Admittedly, Reigen hadn’t thought about that. “Yeah… Probably.” Reigen croaks, his cheeks heating up to an obvious red as he hears himself. “Sorry, I’ve just…” 

The man looks away, ashamed, brown eyes looking anywhere but yours as his sheepishness shows in red hues blooming over his cheeks. Though he knows, there is no running from this, not from the very truth of the fact that…

”I’ve never been in a relationship.” His voice drops decibel by decibel with every word but the shame that drips off every word has no one to blame but himself. 

The “going home” club really was a foolish decision. 

You watch Reigen's throat tense with a barbed swallow, your heart beating with sympathy (but not pity) at the sight of it. He’s pensively pushing his fingers and his gaze is to the floor. The only noise bouncing off the walls is the nervous tap, tap, tap of his feet. If his words didn’t say it, his body language certainly does: the man is anxious. Reigen thought for so long that being self-made was enough for him, but as he’s confronted with his first relationship ever, he can’t help but think he’s falling short of what you need. What you deserve.

That’s when your hand comes over his, fingers curling in for a reassuring squeeze. The corners of your lips subtly curl, a tender smile appearing as you tell him, “That’s okay. Every relationship is different anyways… And I think we can both agree our situation is very different.”

We. Our.

Those two little words seem to snap him out of his stupor; after all, Reigen wouldn’t want to miss that smile of yours. 

His hand shifts, his fingers moving to lace with yours. Immediately, he gulps, “S-Sorry, my hands are kinda sweaty.” 

“That's okay. Some sweat never hurt anybody.” You assure him with a light laugh. “How about this…” You whisper as your other hand folds over his knuckles. “Let's revisit this tonight, in the meantime we can think about all of this and… Shower because I know I need one.”

The proposition is a relieving one, Reigen letting out a breath he didn't even know he was holding when you were done speaking. “I think that's a great idea.” He murmurs with a chuckle, eyes cast on your linked hands as he continues, “I really… Don't want to screw this up.” The man admits, unable to shake off the fear that everything will fall apart and it will be all his fault. He can fake it ‘til he makes it with everything else, everyone else in his life, but he would never do that with you.

He doesn't have to.

And when he hears you tell him that he won’t screw it up, that you won’t let him, with the sweetest smile, he believes you.

A few hours and many, many, Mobgle searches later, Reigen stands outside of your apartment door. He’s traded his suit for a more casual look, even tried parting his hair a different way… Until he saw his reflection in the nearby window and quickly rectified that mistake.

Just in time too because there you are, opening the door with a bigger smile on your face than the one you had this morning. “Reigen!” You chirp, extra excited to show him the bouquet of flowers you had bought for him earlier that day… Only to see the exact bouquet in his hands as well.

Pink roses line both arrangements but the real stars are the gerberas, their stark white petals standing out among the rosy leaves and bundles of baby’s breath. Both sets of flowers are the same, down to the pink cellophane wrap and white ribbon around the stems. 

Both of you blink in surprise at first, stunned to silence until an escaped snort from Reigen gets you both to start laughing. “What are the odds?” You ask after a giggle, wiping your eye of the single tear that came from the belly laugh. “Let me guess…”

You don’t have to, Reigen jumps on it seamlessly, “‘You can’t go wrong with roses and gerberas!’” 

“And let me guess…” You start again with a toothy grin, “He didn’t charge you for the baby’s breath either?”

“... What?”

You sit on the couch– yes, the same couch you two were shamelessly making out on like you were teenagers at the height of puberty less than 24-hours prior. Though this time, there isn’t any tension to cut through. No gulped swallows and nervous stirrings of the gut.

“We should say our first rule out loud at the same time.” You’re overeager, every cell in your body just itching to hammer out these details so you can kiss that stupid face of his again… 

Okay, you really just want to seal the deal so you can officially call Reigen Arataka your boyfriend.

Reigen exclaims with a sweat already running from his brow, “What if yours is way more serious than mine?!” 

“Aw, c’mooooon.” He’s still hesitating so you bring out the big guns… A pout and a stare that would put a kitten to shame.

Reigen’s face could not get redder. He can practically feel his heart ramming against his ribs just looking at you! “... Fine.” He clears his throat, trying to recover from the strike to the heart that was your expression. “You’re not gonna do that every time you need me to agree with you, right?” He asks after a beat, letting out a chuckle that makes the red glow on his cheeks even brighter somehow.

“I make no such promise.” You answer with a nod and a smug smile, your chin wrinkling from the silly expression. “Now, c’mon! One… Two… Three!”

“No PDA at work!” 

“We shouldn’t do anything at work!”

You both let out a sigh of relief. 

“Oh, good.” Reigen leans back on the couch, eyes closed briefly in contentment. “I’m glad we see eye-to-eye on this. But it’s not because I don’t want the others to know!” He’s now sat upright, needing you to see the honesty in his eyes because he would never want you to get the impression he wants to hide you for any reason.

Your hand on his knee soothes his worries, a touch he can already see himself craving. “Hey, hey, hey. Don’t get ahead of yourself. I knew what you meant but Reigen…” You smile at him tenderly, squeezing his leg as you assure him, “You don’t need to watch yourself around me, afraid you’ll make a mistake just because we’re going to be dating now.” Oh, how your cheekbones already tingle from how much the word “date” makes you giddy. 

“Right, right.” Reigen returns your affectionate smile, his hand coming to hold yours. The gesture is still foreign to his bones but god, it feels perfect. “Well, I’m sure we can handle ourselves at work.”

“Totally.”

“Totally.”

Ekubo: Yawwwwn~~What are we doing today?

Reigen brushing teeth: There’s a DVD rental kiosk around the corner. Wanna check it out? 

Mob: Yes I’m here

Reigen: Wait, Mob what? (btw you have foam on your face.)

Mob: Weren’t you asking me where I was?

Reigen: No?

Serizawa pops out: Did someone say movie?!

Mob thinks: I keep hearing someone calling my name.

One unspecified adult: What movies are we getting?

Another unspecified adult: Lets go take a look at what they have.

--20 Minutes Later--

Unspecified Adult: Alright! What do we have? 

(It’s not specified who is speaking here, but based on the speech form it’s either Reigen or Ekubo, not Serizawa)

Ekubo reads: The Hunger Games?

Someone else: We’ll that��s....

Mob: I’ve heard of it before.

Ekubo: Yeah?

Mob: Master told me about it. -He holds up a clothes hanger-

Mob puts the clothes hanger on his head: Yeah! Hunger Games!

Ekubo: Um....

Reigen: NO NO, That’s not it.

(Can someone explain this reference to me? I’ve never seen the Hunger games. I have no idea what this is about.)

Somebody: Whatever. Lets try it. 

There is a loud scream from the TV. Serizawa is startled into dropping his tea tray. Ekubo covers Mob’s eyes. 

Reigen is pissed: WHO PICKED THIS VIOLENT FILM?! Take care of Mob!

Mob peeling Ekubo’s hands off his face: Um... I’m fine with it. I just.....I just feel like something is wrong. 

(He’s actually referring to the presence of the spirit in the apartment. He’s been talking about it since the first panel. The adults are having too much fun they forgot.)

Reigen: You.....You’re not likeing this violence are you?  hmmmmmm

Reigen: Okay Mob! Listen up! I’m gonna teach you the right way to approach media like movies and TV.

You gotta put yourself in the shoes of the protagonist.

(I LOVE THE WAY THIS PANEL IS DRAWN. The framing of the panel is encouraging and mentorly, like a coach telling his player to go out there and do his best, ........except it’s Reigen...teaching Mob to watch movies.... He’s 14, I’m sure he’s seen movies before.)

Reigen puts his hand on Mob’s shoulder: You think you can do it? 

Mob: um....

Reigen: Try it out! I guarantee you’ll get a different experience out of it.

Mob is watching intently while all three adults look bored. The room is filled with fighting sounds.

Mob: That looks like it hurts.

Reigen looks over at Mob and fails to notice the rustling behind him. 

Reigen’s Phone Rings: Crap I forgot

Mob: Is it a client?

Reigen: Yeah

Reigen: I’m just going to go on my own, it’ll be quick.

Ekubo: Are you gonna be okay on your own?

Reigen: Yeah it’s fine, It’s just an in-office consultation. I’ll be back at around noon.

Mob: Okay, see you later

Reigen: yep

Ekubo: So.... what are we gonna do?

Serizawa: Ummmmm

(I like how Ekubo hangs out on top of Mobs head, the way he does all the time as a spirit.)

Serizawa gets an idea looking at the microwave: How about we cook while waiting for Reigen to return?

Mob: That’s a good idea, he’d be hungry when he comes back Mob thinks: I don’t know how to cook though. 

Ekubo rolls up sleeves: Lets do it! It’s not like we’re busy. I’ll show you my signature dish!

Serizawa: Ekubo-kun...

Ekubo: Alright lets divide up  the work.

Mob: Okay

Serizawa: ah! Yes!

They start cooking. Mob cuts himself chopping vegetables.

Serizawa: Ah! You’re bleeding!  Mob: Ow ow... Ekubo: You cut yourself AGAIN?!

They’re almost done.  Mob: Im hungry Ekubo making fried rice. Should we make something more than just this? Serizawa: Ah, we can add a salad!

It’s 12:42

Reigen Returns: Ugh this place is so far from the office. I’m starving.

He’s jiggling the key in the lock: lock is acting up again. 

Huh?

(This is a callback to the beginning when he was working the lock, he told everyone to do things in pairs to avoid being possessed. He forgot and went off on his own.) Reigen gets possessed

The door clatters and he enters the apartment. 

Mob: ah! Master! Welcome back!

Mob: Master?

Reigen: What have you guys busied yourself with? 

Ekubo: Um.... what?

Serizawa: We made lunch

Mob: eh? ehhh?

Reigen:THIS is what you’ve decided to whittle away the last few hours on?

(This is so hard to translate, but it’s what I love about translating. His word choice here is saying that 1. they acted without permission. 2. they did something that wasted time, and resources and was ultimately unnecessary. 3. they’re screwing around like children.)

Reigen: No one asked you to do this. Why you did is beyond me. 

Others: ?!

Reigen: I put a lot of effort into planning what foods to bring and what the meal plans were going to be.

(Reigen doesn’t normally have light colored eyes. That’s a nice touch.)

Ekubo is looking at Mob

Mob: I....Im sorry

Ekubo remembers how eager mob wanted to cook for Reigen, how he cut him self trying. 

Serizawa: Mr. Reigen, this is very unlike you. Is something wrong?

Ekubo to Reigen:  I don’t like your tone.

Serizawa: Ekubo-kun!*

Ekubo: Look, I’m not sure what’s gotten into you but.......

Reigen: Hmm?

(*This wasn’t made all that clear in the manga, but Serizawa is ALWAYS very deferential around Reigen. He’s never direct with him, meekly suggests things rather than outright stating them. He doesn’t treat their relationship as that of equals, he’s the subordinate and he expresses this in the language he uses and the tone he takes. As opposed to Ekubo who is direct and not afraid to confront Reigen. Ekubo’s pronouns, word choice and tone expresses the belief that he is an equal if not better than the people around him.

Which is why Serizawa is shocked that Ekubo is so direct. Like, How could he just outright say “I dont like your tone” TO Reigen?)

Reigen: got something to say? 

Ekubo: ....how dare you? What gives you the right?

Serizawa: ....?

Reigen: What gives YOU the right? It’s not YOUR body. It’s not like I asked you to possess this man. You did that yourself. 

Serizawa notices that there’s something on Reigen: Ekubo-kun w...wait!

Ekubo: Bastard, if you don’t stop running your mouth....

Reigen smiles: Hmmm? Are you not an evil spirit? You REALLY think you live a normal human life again? 

(I love that panel with Reigen’s silent open-mouthed smile, he knows he’s won.  He’s gonna pull the trigger now.)

Ekubo: ..... I see 

Mob: Eku~ Ekubo: I understand now. -He walks out and closes the door being him-

Mob stands at the door: Ekubo?

Serizawa: Ekubo-kun

(AAAHHH I LOVE HOW YOU DON’T SEE EKUBO’S EXPRESSION IN THE FIRST PANEL THERE)

Reigen: Enough.... he’s so much trouble.

Mob is still at the door:..... Ekubo

Mob: When we were cooking, he said....

Ekubo: He’s considerate in a way.... For an evil spirit like me, he treats me no different than anyone else around him.... that’s something. 

Mob: Eventhough Ekubo is an evil spirit, and a dangerously powerful one at that,... he’s an uncharacteristically a good person.

Mob opens the door and runs outside after him.

I like this part SO GODDAMN MUCH. Reigen is really good at reading people and knowing what to say. He can use his words to get people to feel how he wants them to, and the idea of him getting possessed and unleashing his ability on other people to destroy them is so goddamn cool. 

You’ve heard of Empaths. They are people that easily understand the emotions of others. But in psychology, there’s a lesser known personality type called a “Dark Empath” that can understand peoples feelings well but is also a sociopath that has no problems hurting other people.

Dark Empaths use their understanding of other people to hurt, defraud and other take advantage of others. These are people that convince others to commit suicide or charm people out of their life savings etc.

I wish there was more Dark Empath! Reigen fics. This is something I’ve not seen in Fanfiction, in fact, this comic is the only place I’ve seen it. It’s such an interesting concept. Like, if there were fics that cast him as a villan, then it’s perfectly in-character and logical for him to be a Dark Empath.

So, I have this fun Mob Psycho 100 and Gegege no Kitaro crossover AU.

All I have so far is the idea that Rat Man/Nezumi Otoko and Reigen have a past. They met when Reigen was around Mob's age. Originally, Nezumi thought of Reigen as an easy mark, but ended up growing fond of him because he sees him as a younger version of himself as well as a kindred spirit. At 14, Reigen was still trying to figure things out and he was already running his mouth, practicing magic tricks, and trying to start rookie business ventures (like selling sandwiches his sister made for him, reading tarot cards, and playing matchmaker for classmates). Nezumi successfully appealed to and sold Reigen on the idea that he was a decent business man willing to "teach him the ropes."

So, he became Reigen's mentor and later, business partner. He taught Reigen most of what he knows about cons, scams, and other nefarious dealings. But Nezumi betrayed and backstabbed Reigen quite a few different times, too. Reigen's smart, but Nezumi's years of experience, manipulative skills, and knowledge of Reigen's background (Reigen confided in him for quite awhile) were enough to keep pulling him back. This screwed with Reigen and, at least in this AU, is part of why he's reluctant to be honest and vulnerable with other people. It's also why he actively studies people and learns how to read their faces, body language, and emotions. While Reigen outright refuses to work with or make any further contracts with Nezumi, he keeps in contact because of Nezumi's wealth of knowledge and unique connections. (Reigen also feels sympathetic for Nezumi, knowing he'll never change, but still holding naive hope that he's wrong. He's Reigen's 'weird uncle'.)

Nezumi still considers Reigen a close friend in a similar, weird, and complicated way that he does Kitaro. He contacts Reigen at least once every two weeks, sometimes just to check in, but more often hoping to get help with some scheme or plan. The feeling isn't mutual, though. Reigen would help Nezumi in a life or death situation, but he'll refuse if it's a smaller, petty manner. He doesn't respond to most of Nezumi's texts either and is low-key pissed at how many new numbers are Nezumi's latest burner phone rather than a prospective new client.

When Reigen was first involved with Nezumi's scheming, Kitaro tried multiple times to warn and dissuade him from working with Nezumi. But Reigen was so stubborn and charmed by Nezumi the warnings fell on deaf ears. Years later, Reigen apologized and sometimes refers clients to Kitaro when he realizes they're talking about a yokai and not a rat in the attic or a minor spirit Mob could exorcise. Sometimes, Kitaro recruits Reigen to rescue someone from the worse consequences of Nezumi's schemes or Nezumi himself.

Mob has met Kitaro once. Otherwise, they haven't really collaborated or talked further with each other. And Reigen has tried his damndest to keep his protege from meeting Nezumi. But they've met and Mob knows how to deter and actively avoid Nezumi better than Reigen can. Nezumi wants a friendship, but Mob is only bare-bones polite and absolutely blunt around him.

Other Details:

Reigen never understood Nezumi's tendency to immediately blow his earnings on frivolous items or dates. He's always been reluctant to mark up prices as much as Nezumi does, too.

Nezumi would gladly let a gorgeous female client flirt her way to a discount or even spend his entire pay check on a list of cute girls he had on standby. He's tried to give Reigen tips on how an 'average, ugly guy' can score. Reigen isn't interested half the time and rolls his eyes. When he's older, some female clients try to make moves on him before Nezumi, but he usually shuts them down. (Reigen will flirt every once in awhile to sweeten a deal for his benefit).

Nezumi has tried to set Reigen up a few times. Reigen refuses every time, telling him that he's perfectly capable of finding a relationship or date when/if he ever wants one.

You found Rengoku with black haori hakama, reaching your hand.

And you found yourself on Shiromuku, sitting together with him.

When you walked together and almost reached the shrine, your eyes laid on a cape. It's on top of the tree.

It's Rengoku's cape.

"This is not it." You looked at Rengoku's confused face. "Why is my nichirin here?"

"I can't read your mind. Who are you?!" You started to unsheathing your sword.

"It's me! Your Rengoku!"

"No you're not!!" You stabbed him at his chest without hesitation. "Kyoujurou will never addressed himself as his family name to me!!"

He disappeared, enough to prove that Rengoku is fake.

"I had to wake up!"

You took off all of your dress, picked up your sword, started to attack that place randomly.

"There must be- there must be something!!!"

Suddenly, your body hit a wall. You stroked that thin wall, and sliced it down

You found a white room with nothing but some kind of marble flowing on the air.

"A ball?" You touched it.

You gasped and startled from your seat, finally conscious from your dreams. You looked at your left. A meat-like started to consume you.

"Dammit! I know there's something fishy in this train!!" You grasped your sword and swing it down to that disgusting meat.

It's all mess, the train changed its appearance. People around you were started to consumed by demon. You slashed all of them with your breathing techniques, but it's no use. They grew back again like annoying fungal.

'Where are they?!' You wondered how could they sleep in peace like this? Did Rengoku and the trio sleep too? Did they sense that this is demon attacks?

"I don't have any idea what is going in here but- Passengers first!"

You attempted to saved all of them, not moving forward for the next train car. You thought about looked after Rengoku but that's not your priority right now.

"Kyoujurou, please stay safe!"

It felt like a long night, the demons started to attack you too. Endless breathing, slashing and chopping. You could feel your stamina depleted.

"Why am I here again." You suddenly regret your choice. The damage on your body were countless. Cuts, bruises and wounds. The wound gap on your chest were widing.

You finally realized that you recklessly infiltrating to this train and forgot that you didn't wear your uniform.

Rengoku and the others probably at another car right now. He must be cleaned this up fast.

"I will never take off my uniform again." You grunted after one slashing movement on the demon.

Suddenly the train fluctuated and the force threw you out from the opened window. You grasped your fingers at the window, feeling your body swaying left and right. After some juggles and uncontrollable moving, the train felt down at your direction

"...are you kidding me?"

At the moment, you found a glimpse of chance and jumped inside the train again. You held the seat, trying to get a good grip while the train falling down.

The impact on your head made you unconscious. You could feel your body smashed on the ground. There were random pain on your chest, back and stomach

'Wake up, me! You couldn't just sleep here!'

You crawled on your tummy and tried to stand up. In your vague vision, you saw people fighting from distance.

Somebody are near, you could sensed it. One is clearly Rengoku and you don't know who is one man with red hair.

After clearing your vision and stepped forward to their direction with staggered legs, you discovered something

He fought with the Upper Moon 3 and Akaza probably his name. Rengoku wasn't in good shape, his left eye were injured and countless bleeding were flowing from his head.

You get a grip of your sense again, grabbing your sword and ran forward to help him

"Let's fight until the eternity!!" The red hair man shouted.

"Kyuu no Kata! Rengoku!!" Rengoku unleashed his breathing.

"Hakai Satsu! Messhiki!" And so does that Upper Moon.

"KYOUJUROU!!" You leaped forward between them.

After both of them commencing attack, you could see the Upper Moon moved forward Rengoku with incredible speed, readying his technique.

"Juu no Kata!! Reigen!!" You blocked Akaza destruction technique with your breathing style and pulled Rengoku up in time, shoving him down to your back. You made your body as his shield, and pushed your sword slicing on Akaza's knuckles, proceed to splitting his arms into two parts.

He anticipated it fast and jumped back, quickly recovering from your attack. But it didn't take a long time until he leaped forward and launched his knuckles towards you again

"What a pain." You clicked your tongue and dodged another knuckles from Akaza and quickly clutched his hand.

Your left hand now was grabbing his left hand and your right hand held your sword.

Rengoku still got damage from Akaza's attack. The deep cut wound from his technique was widing fast.

'What a great power.' You panted, your wound on the chest wasn't look better either. Your rash movement made the cut deeper and wider, not matching on the strength you still have. "Kamado! Don't just stand there, pressed his wound!"

"Ye-yes!" Tanjirou removed Rengoku's cape and pressed the wound with it.

"Don't underestimate woman power." You clenched your teeth, clutched his hand intact on your hips and locked it. He surprised by the strength you got.

"You are... A woman?"

"Aren't really having a good time hunting two Pillars, are you? Akaza is your name right?"

"...I can't attack woman."

"What-"

He pulled with his strength, the tremor impacted your body. You struggled on kept his hand in place.

"I WON'T LET YOU GO! GO NO KATA! ZANGEKI!"

You slashed and penetrated your blade inside Akaza's neck, trying to kill him.

His next move really surprising you. He destroyed his own left neck with force. It exploded along with your sword. Your blade shards were pierced on your hand.

You fell down on your knees. Akaza retreated.

"Hold his wounds, Inosuke!" Tanjirou chased Akaza down.

"Wha- what are you doing here?" You trembled but still have strength to moved forward Rengoku, trying to press his wound too.

"Use that dumb technique you taught me to stop your own bleeding, stupid!"

Rengoku chuckled in pain. "Yomoya... I will die soon."

"You will not die, idiot!"

You saw Tanjirou screamed something. He already threw his sword on Akaza, but looks like he could make it out before sunrise.

"Hang on!" You carried him on your back. "Kamado, come back! Help me tied his cape onto his stomach!!"

"Yes!"

Rengoku slowly slipping away from his consciousness. You shouted his name for many times.

"KYOUJUROU! KYOUJUROU DON'T DIE ON ME!"

It's the last words he heard from you.

Rengoku finally woke up from his sleep, touched his left patched eye slowly. He pressed his stomach, there was stitching patterns on it.

He looked around

There's you, sleeping peacefully beside Rengoku. Your condition was worst than him, he knew that. Before lose unconsciousness, he saw you drenched on your own blood, even the color of your orange yukata were blended in red.

He wanted to move from the white bed and approach you, but the pain on his stomach was saying 'No'.

Shinobu showed up and checked on him. Rengoku thanked her for taking care of him and you.

"No, thank her." She straight up pointed you. "If she didn't piggy-back you and carried you here as soon as she can, you probably die now."

"Really?" His eyes averted to you.

"It's amazing on how she carried you in that state. The crows already inform me that she was on her way here, but I didn't expect her to bleeding from head to toe like while carrying you." She moved to your bed. "She's fine now."

Rengoku relieved.

"Can you help me sat beside her?"

"I actually prohibited you to move right now... But oh well." She pulled the chair and helped Rengoku sat down beside you

After Shinobu left both of you, you wake up.

You looked at your side, there's Rengoku focused on peeling apple.

"Shouldn't you move right now?"

"!!! You awake!"

He cupped your bandaged cheek. You writhed in pain.

"Ops sorry." He grinned. "How are you feeling? Should I call Shinobu?"

"No, it's fine." You tried to sit down. Kyoujurou helped you. "I can't attack woman, my ass. In the end, he didn't get killed huh." You looked at your injured hand.

"Yeah with that destructive skill, it probably hard to defeat him. But no worries! We could defeat him later!"

"How are the Mizunotos?"

"They were fine, they are in different ward right now."

"Good." You looked down at your body. "I don't want to look at it, but there must be huge scar on my chest right now."

"No matter what scars were on you-" He kissed your forehead. "You still beautiful."

"...with your state now, shouldn't you retire?" You touched his eye patch.

"You are the one who probably should retire." He caressed your hair. "I'm still in good shape. So marry with me, having 7 kids."

You received the peeled apple from Rengoku's hand with your mouth, making face-palm towards him.

Most Badass Character: Clearly Shigeo has the biggest most raw powers, but he’s most badass in his character development i think, in the way he sees the world, how he as a main character manages to skip all the “i’m a misunderstood and lonely person bc of my powers” and realize he is the person he is bc he has people around that loves and cherishes him as he is, and that way he feels compelled to be good and kind and the best version of himself.... Epic. Also Reigen is badass bc as ridiculous a character he is, with dubious morals and a lying habit, he is a good person overall and also would die for his loved ones. And idk how he can get away with everything tbh, my mind explodes anytime he twists words and ends up winning arguments, like sir... thats a mad skill right there

My thoughts: they are dumbasses in LOVE

What makes me happy about them: their interactions overall are priceless, they balance each other a lot and give each other a sense of purpose and stability. Also, i project a little on serizawa and reigen is... y’know.... a flamboyant kind of dude.... which is my type, so.....

What makes me sad about them: the angst when thinking reigen could doubt his feelings or actions around serizawa, worrying over he isnt manipulating him into thinking he is in love, and serizawa thinking he isnt enough for reigen bc he is too nervous about not having enough relationship experience.....

Things done in fanfic that annoys me: when they picture them realizing they have feelings for each other bc they are jealous thinking they could be dating other ppl. I am polyamorous so i Do Not vibe with this trope At All

They see them grow up and become good people that go after their dreams, and are there for them if they have any trouble or are going though a rough patch.

How I feel about this character: I feel like i have to protect him, but i guess he wouldnt accept it xd it makes me sad he has such an awful dad, and that it will probably lead to suffering to him as he grows up, bc that kind of abuse can really fuck you up, specially when you have to act like an adult to your parents at such a young age

Any/all the people I ship romantically with this character: ritsu! they just click together, and i love how their relationship is depicted as super funny by other people. They are best friends first and over all, but also are in love.

My favorite non-romantic relationship for this character: Its more of a headcanon but with Serizawa! I think he would get protective of Shou and try to check up on him from time to time, but Shou would do the same for him bc he is worried at how his dad treated him and the thing he said the last time they saw him. But actually they are projecting their own need to be protected on the other, so it ends up being kinda messy, but then they become friends and are able to laugh and do other stuff that doesnt include talking about Shou’s dad and Claw

My unpopular opinion about this character: i refer to him as redhead goku instead of jonny test xd

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: that his feelings about his dad were explored more deeply, and also the thing i said before about Serizawa, i think that would have been spot on and could be a character development thing for both

I don’t think anyone was necessarily screwed up per say, more like I wanted more out of them. Emi, Minori, and even Serizawa a bit come to mind, but nothing really serious. Just wish we could’ve had more of them.

ah crap this is hard… I really like mob w the body improvement club, but I think tome and mob is also really good?? Teru and Ritsu was really nice too I wish they had more interaction.

Character I most identify with:

MMM My gut is saying mob, my heart is saying serizawa, my head is saying tome.

Mob was originally my go-to comfort character w the series and I think he still is one, and I relate a lot to the social fears he has and the want to improve himself. Also the emotions explosion… yeah.

Serizawa has slowly climbed the ranks and might be there as well. The social fear and isolation is also there, along with how his entire story was presented and how his mannerisms were animated… it fit a lot.

Tome, is really similar to me personality wise too I’d say? Both really into specific things and can’t help but speak passionately about them or do a lot relating to it, even if it’s really out there.

Funnily enough, almost every single quiz I’ve taken says I’m most like reigen, though.

Part of me says reigen, for how flexible, confident, and kind he is, another part says, weirdly enough, none?

I know it's a day later, but in light of recent anime events, how about Reigen Arataka for the character thing? :D

“In light of recent events” yeah ok sure you can put it that way I guess hahahahaaaaaa…………………….. *gross sobbing* (Seriously though thank you Rosy I don’t mind it’s a “day late” XD)

What I like about them

I will hit on “deeper” stuff in the next section, but, honestly? I really just like that he’s there for Mob. He’s not always great at it, but he tries, and you can really believe that this guy cares about this kid and wants him to grow into a good person. I have ALWAYS loved his type of dynamic, and Reigen and Mob fit my (non-romantic) fictional relationship preferences to a T.

That and he’s hilarious, and the animators have way too much fun with him, and I’m not even talking about them “thirsting” over him or whatever, I just mean going overboard with the hand motions, expressions, body language, etc. XD

What I dislike about them

Oddly enough, I actually really didn’t like Reigen at first. The earliest episodes in the anime did a good job at showing him as the world at large would see him: just a fraud using a kid for his own gain. But over time we got to see more of the other sides of him, and by the end of season 1, I had completely changed my mind. Is he still a fraud that can underappreciate those around him due to having an ego built up in order to help him deal with his actual insecurities…

But I don’t dislike this about him anymore. In fact, I actually enjoy it because every character needs flaws, and, even better, these are flaws he is now actually trying to work on. So, all that to say that I’m not sure there’s anything I really dislike about him, because even the parts I disliked initially - and still don’t approve of - are things that make him a better, more rounded character. And I think that’s great.

Favourite moment

Oh gosh, this is hard because my favorite moment of the series does involve him, but in a way it’s more about Mob’s response to it so that seems like maybe I should pick something more specific to Reigen but… ah, screw it, it’s the end of episode 7 in season 2. XD

If two entire episodes counted as a “moment” I would choose s02e06 and e07, but that’s not really how this works, so of course I’m going to go with the part where Reigen asks Mob if he “knows”, and when Mob says that he’s a good person, he literally looks like he’s holding back happy/relieved tears. And it gets me. Every time. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched that one scene, lol. It’s so good, man.

Runners up include:

- Telling Mob near the end of season 1 and he doesn’t have to fight, he’s the one who will suffer in the end, and it’s ok to run.

- Following that up by being freaking awesome and SLAYING those Claw dudes both psychically and verbally.

- That scene in season 2 where Mob is panicking because he doesn’t want to exorcise the ghost family and Reigen realizes this and steps in and just fakes the whole thing in order to take the pressure off of Mob without turning the clients against him.

- Reigen noticing that Mob is “fidgeting” at work, but when he realizes what he’s actually doing, he literally drops everything and is all “let’s go running right now” and puts, like, everything into helping Mob get better, like, I know this scene was just given to us in the most recent episode but I feel so blessed??

Least favourite moment

This may sound like a weird one to pick (especially with the whole “grow up already” scene in play), but my least favorite is probably when he pretends to hold a seance. I mean, it’s funny, sure, but… you know how I talked about the fact that I like his flaws now? This one very specific instance is a case where I really can’t defend him. He knows he’s not a psychic. He knows he can’t actually speak to the dead. And Mob either can’t or won’t do it as he’s sitting right there while this is going on. So… this is literally one of those times where Reigen straight up scams somebody. Not cool, man.

(As for the scene where he’s a huge jerk to Mob? I actually really like that scene because while it’s awful it really does fit his character perfectly, and he seriously needed to hear the back talk from Mob to kickstart his growth. So that’s a “love to hate it” thing, lol.)

A situation with this character that I want to see explored more

I want to see this grown man have actual friends, dang it!! Mob (and now maybe Ritsu and Hanazawa) is great, but get this guy someone his own age to talk to! I want to see what he’s like with an actual peer that he likes, not just an apprentice or a blind follower! (Dimple only kind of counts at this point, much as I love him. XD)

An interesting AU for this character

I don’t even know if this counts, but I want a Mob Psycho musical. I want a Reigen dance number, dang it. Dimple can have a villain song about wanting to lead a world wide cult. I need to see the Body Improvement Club training as a dance sequence where they sing about positive body image and loving yourself and working hard. Mob can’t dance for crap but has a surprisingly amazing singing voice, but he pretty much only sings when he’s alone. Yeah. I’ll go with that. XD

Do my thoughts on why he has an ego because he’s insecure count as a headcanon, or is that just an accepted truth?

Of course after the latest episode I am now headcanoning that Reigen starts running every day after realizing how out of shape he was and also a desire to try something that Mob is actively invested in (body improvement).

Ah, see? This was fun. Mob Psycho can be fun. When it’s not, ya know, preying on some of my worst fears, anyway. Ah yes. Good times. XD

Biweekly Media Roundup

- The Sandman (TV) - I suppose Sandman was a bit of a grower for me, as while I did enjoy my first watch quite a bit, it was only a few weeks later after engaging in some fan content and revisiting it that I really appreciated it. I standby that it’s not flawless but I was less bothered by expectations the second time around and was able to appreciate the cinematography and overall themes a lot more. Dream is a great character in both concept and portrayal, so easy to root for and simultaneously so fun to bully. I do really hope Netflix doesn’t screw it over and actually greenlights a season 2 soon, I’m really interested in seeing how the rest of the Endless are portrayed given how interesting the ones we got were. Anyway Episode 6 deserves all the awards, we love Death and Hob here.

- Do Revenge (Movie) - Honestly, I’m a bit disappointed with this one - I heard quite a bit of people hyping it up as a fun callback to 90′s and 00′s teen comedies, but I can’t say I found it particularly interesting or funny.  I wanted to like it- I was getting Jennifer’s Body vibes at first - but there were just too many extraneous characters, not enough comedy, and too little impactful or memorable moments overall. I don’t know, I don’t want to be too mean as I don’t think it was completely inept, there were some interesting costume designs and plot twists, but I can’t say I got much out of watching it or would ever be interested in seeing it again.

- Holes (Movie) - Yearly rewatch of Holes with my sister, man is this movie so good, just textbook clever writing in how well it ties everything together and makes every little detail meaningful. Also, what a unique concept and setting.

- Shadow’s House (Anime) - So we come to a close on Shadow’s House season 2 and man, do I hope the Japanese viewership was high enough to warrant a season 3 because this show is so underrated and underappreciated here in the west. I do kind of get why - the genre mixing of an engaging horror mystery and slower paced slice-of-life esque shenanigans make it hard to recommend to fans of one or the other, as the horror fans will likely find the occasional slow of pacing for interpersonal stuff annoying to the pace of the mystery while cutesy fans could definitely be turned off by some of the more horrific imagery and concepts. I don’t mind as much personally as I find both the characters and their relationships charming as well as the mystery and horror elements super well done, but even I felt the pacing drag a bit between each major revelation. It reminds me a lot of Princess Tutu - a genuinely great anime full of both whimsy and dark elements that is super creative in concept but quite hard to sell people on thanks to it’s child friendly slow buildup. I might wait a bit to see if a season 3 will be announced before reading the manga, but I absolutely will be returning to the series at some point, as I cannot stress enough how impressed I am with the concept and execution of the mystery and the slow reveal of the Shadow Family.

- Mob Psycho 100 (Anime) - Yup yup. Congrats to Reigen for sweeping all those twitter polls btw. The Tumblr Sexyman Poll will go down in history forever.

- Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure (Anime) - They Yassified Dio. Also I know all Jojo outfits are ridiculous but seriously, wtf is pink boy wearing. 

- Star Trek: Lower Decks (TV) - Hey Lower Decks is back sweet! Still love the whole cast as well as just the concept of a show about the lives of the one-off/lower ranking background crew members rather than the higher ranking officers. The show can get pretty creative with it’s episode ideas and settings which I definitely appreciate, but to be honest I’ll never get tired of seeing the cast watch some crazy alien shit go down only to casually respond with “ugg not this shit again” and then cutting to them having to deal with the collateral after someone else fixed the issue. Not that the cast doesn’t get plenty of heroic  moments to shine, there’s just a great comedy in seeing them treat cursed mind controlling death masks and killer robot outbreaks with the same level of concern as a typical tax accountant filing a report. 

- Made in Abyss (Anime) - Okay we are 6 episodes into the 3rd season and it’s gotten a little better, more focus on lore and plot rather than. the other stuff it was doing. Hope it can stick to that so I don’t feel weird about watching it. 

- Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint (Webnovel) - Rather than binging this I’m slowly making my way through the audiobook. Honestly my attention kinda waned during a fairly early arc due to it’s reliance on the audience being familiar with korean history but now that that’s through it’s starting to get pretty engaging again. It will probably be awhile before I’m finished but I’m glad to have it.

Reigen Continues: They’re saying that the changing rooms are haunted. I think it’s more likely a peeping tom. 

Here, this one’s yours.

Reigen holds out a skimpy one piece at Ekubo, and Ekubo screams. 

Reigen continues shoving the tiny one piece in his face. 

Ekubo:...........

YOU’VE GOTTA BE KIDDING ME! STOP CALLING ME OVER IF YOU DON’T HAVE AN ACTUAL EXORCISM.

Reigen: Eh?

Ekubo stomps out and slams the door: I DONT HAVE TIME FOR THIS.

Reigen: um...

Reigen thinks: Wow, he’s really overreacting today. Did I piss him off?  Maybe the body he borrowed isn’t feeling well today?

Yeah, actually he’s got a point about the costume. If someone recognized the guy (his host), it could be a problem for him in his real life.

Huh! I never really thought of Ekubo as someone with principles. Guess I was wrong about him.

Welp, I guess I’m taking this one alone. 

Ekubo is breathing heavily as he walks around. 

DAMMIT

Caption on his shoes -Sudden stop-

-Flushing noise- Ekubo: What the hell

I’m a high level evil spirit..... 

I think I’m spending too much time with this body. Maybe I need to cut back?

Shouldn’t have possessed a body for this. I’ll just stay a spirit for the time being. 

Reigen gets kicked out by the bouncer: Get out of here you lowlife! 

Back at the office, Reigen is on the phone:

Reigen: Ah...yes.... the task this time is a little more difficult than I expected, but It’s nothing I can’t handle. 

Oh no! don’t worry.

It’s fine, rest assured, we won’t be charging any additional fees for this. 

Ah yes, we will absolutely take care of it this time. 

Reigen hangs up

Ekubo yells at him the moment he sets the phone down: YOUR METHOD WAS IDIOTIC, YOU IDIOT.

Reigen: Hey! My plan failed because you wouldn’t do your part and go with me. 

Mob! Get ready, we’re going back there later tonight. Ekubo, you’re coming with us. 

Mob: okay

Ekubo: DID YOU EVEN HEAR WHAT I SAID?!

Reigen: This is our spot.... The back exits here lead to the changing rooms. 

Mob: Wow Master, you really looked into this. You’re really amazing master. 

Reigen: Ekubo, we’re doing some physical work today and really could have used another set of hands. Why didn’t borrow a body for this? 

Ekubo: How am I supposed to find one on such short notice? 

Reigen: Can you take this more seriously? You should come with one every time. Can you maybe show a bit more dedication to your work? 

Ekubo: FOR THE LAST TIME, I AM NOT YOUR EMPLOYEE.

Reigen: Well, it can’t be helped. Mob, you take this and set it up according to our plan.

Mob: okay

Ekubo: A rope? 

Reigen: Ekubo, stop screwing around. Go inside and take a look at what’s going on. Report back here if you find anything!

Sleepy MP100 Headcanons 3/3

Its actually canon that Reigen falls asleep watching crappy B movies all the time. Screw first names, we need a character profile like that for Serizawa.

Reigen

Fidgety sleeper, rolls around and changes positions a lot

Not actually awake for it, he just does it in his sleep

Gets tangled in his sheets a lot

Would probably sleep better if he didn’t eat expired weird snacks before bed

All of his pajamas are just sweats

TACKY sweats, like the one from the New Year’s arc

If its really too hot he’ll just sleep shirtless

Falls asleep easiest and sleeps best when he’s not trying to

Likes to have background light and noise 

Hates silence with a passion

Serizawa

Sleeps with the covers pulled up over his head 

Has old habits from being a personal body guard

Always sleeps between another person and the doors/windows

Can go pretty long without sleep and still be alert

Keeps little to no furniture or other items in his bedroom

Its gotten better, but he still levitates stuff pretty frequently

Sometimes wakes up hanging from the ceiling like a blanket cocoon

Has room darkening curtains over the windows

Before Reigen started cutting his hair, he would put it in a bun/ponytail to keep it out of his face

DID Mob

Okay, so I’ve been headcanoning that Mob might have Dissociative Identity Disorder, or as it’s frequently incorrectly called Multiple Personality Disorder. This is due largely to Mob’s system of functioning based on turning points that cause explosive changes in his personality, as well as his frequent dissociation. A lot of this is pretty obvious upfront, but I thought I would make a post about it in more detail! It’s all under the cut to save your dashboards.

So there’s a lot to unpack here, but let’s start with something that is a staple of having Dissociative Identity Disorder: Time loss and gaps in memory.

Mob frequently has gaps in his memory when 100%/???% switch in. It causes accidents to happen with no memory in between! This is one of the most common hallmarks of DID. But why are Mob’s other forms so destructive? If Mob’s ???% form and 100% form are different alters, it would make sense that they’re protective alters. And for all extents and purposes, they are extremely protective. We never see these forms come out unless Mob experiences something traumatic. Protective alters in DID are extremely common and can manifest in a few different forms, including ‘fighting’ parts, persecutors, and caretakers. The first two are most relevant here: a fighting alter being an alter who takes the ‘fight’ part in fight or flight reactions of PTSD and acts upon those urges. A persecutor is an alter who acts defensively in kinda screwed up ways, IE a persecutor alter may self harm or lash out at younger internal parts in order to ‘protect’ sensitive information and emotions. Both of these are very similar to how Mob internalizes external conflict. We ALWAYS see Mob ‘switch’ into 100% or ???% when he is backed into a corner. To me, this seems right in line with the protective alters that often manifest in DID: For example, we first see ???% after Mob is choked to the point of passing out:

Keeping all this in mind, to me it seems that 100% is a protective alter in the fight sense and ???% is similar, but also tends to be almost self-harmful in their actions which makes them a bit similar to persecutor alters. I wonder what the inner monologue in Mob’s head during ???%’s rampages might be like to really see what their functionality is system-wise. Nonetheless, it seems obvious that both these forms are protective alters made to protect someone who has been through various forms of trauma, be they from being strangled, emotionally cornered, or hit by a car. The fact that they are so different from Mob’s usual actions just goes to show how they could be alters. 

So how else does Mob’s DID manifest? The protective alters might be the most obvious, but there’s gotta be more. Well, for one thing, Mob is almost constantly living in a state of dissociation.

It’s like half of Mob’s personality to be completely dissociated and a little out of touch with reality. “Eh?” is basically his catch phrase. I think this lines out the host of Mob’s system would be: which is the Mob we mostly know and love, the one who is a little out of it at all times and still wants to do the right thing regardless.  But aside from that, we kinda see Mob have a few hyperfixations that I think can be attributed to alters. Among these could be his crush on Tsubomi, his need to be popular, and his desire to improve his body. These are all things that are important to Mob but fluctuate in importance. Sometimes, they’re the most important thing, but it seems overall Mob tends to forget them and just go with the flow of what other people are looking for from him.  (To be honest, I still have some thinking to do on what more minor alters would do within Mob’s system, but this will give you a taste. I figure some of the skill regression that occasionally happens while Mob is working for Reigen could also be attributed to DID).

Anyway, there’s my two cents on why I think Mob might have DID (or at least headcanon him as such!) Hope you enjoyed the read, and feel free to send more ideas about this since I don’t remember everything perfectly!

Hello Serirei, my dear old friend.

When Reigen returned from the bathroom in only his briefs, Serizawa was sitting on the edge of the bed with his hands in his lap, back straight to near stiffness, and he was still wearing everything down to his socks.

“Don’t be nervous, Seri,” Reigen said gently, sitting down next to him and clearly trying not to laugh. Serizawa’s gaze drifted down his body, from the light blond hair on his chest to the long fingers that settled on his thigh.

“I just...don’t know...um.” Serizawa swallowed, hoping he wasn’t sweating as much as he felt like he was.

“We don’t have to do anything,” Reigen said coolly, finally resting his palm over both of Serizawa’s, squeezing. “We can just talk. I can turn on a movie or something.”

“No!” Serizawa yelped, feeling Reigen’s fingers jump. “I...I want to...I want...all of it. I’m just...I don’t have much experience, Reigen-san. My apologies.”

Reigen rose from the bed and stood in front of Serizawa, picking up his hands to lift him to his feet so they were standing close enough to touch, resting his head against Serizawa’s chest for a second. “Don’t apologize. It’s fine. We’ll take it slow, and if we need to stop, just say so.” He reached up and started unthreading Serizawa’s tie first, slipping it from his collar and lying it on his desk chair. He leaned up to kiss him as his slid his blazer off his shoulders, folding it neatly with the tie, and then started on the buttons of his dress shirt.

“What if...I don’t know how to make you...what if I can’t make you feel good? What if I screw up? What if --”

“Katsuya,” Reigen said, firmly. “That isn’t going to happen.” Serizawa shuddered as he felt Reigen place his hands on his hips, soft skin under his trembling digits. “I already feel great. Want to know why?”

“...Why?”

“You’re here. The rest of it’s just a bonus.” He grinned as he finished the last of the buttons and slid his hands inside the open shirt, around to Serizawa’s back, rubbing and stroking, a comforting gesture as much as one that made Serizawa feel like he was about to float away. “You’re always so reliable at the office...let me be your helping hand tonight, okay?”

Serizawa took a relaxed breath and nodded. “Okay.”
